Description of the route
This circular route is ideal for hikers with moderate experience. It starts and ends at Camping El Cares in Santa Marina de Valdeón. The most demanding section is at the beginning, where you climb over 400 meters of elevation in just 2.5 km, ascending through a dense beech forest that occasionally offers impressive views of the Central Massif of the Picos de Europa and the village of Santa Marina from the heights of Peña de las Cabras.
After reaching the Barbujó area, an ancient oak grove, the route provides unique panoramas of Peña de la Silla and much of the Picos de Europa. The descent follows little-used and, in some stretches, poorly defined paths, but the downhill is gradual and allows for a comfortable return to the campsite.
Important recommendation:
Since the route is not well marked and some sections can be confusing, it is strongly recommended to download the GPS track and use it during the hike to avoid getting lost and to enjoy the route more safely.
This route combines physical challenge at the beginning with the reward of spectacular landscapes and the tranquillity of native forests, making it perfect for those seeking an authentic experience in the heart of the Picos de Europa National Park. It is advisable to wear suitable footwear, bring enough water, and check the weather forecast before starting the hike.
